Our Program

"An Ironclad Commitment to Delivering the Highest Quality Addiction Treatment.”

Our 4 Treatment Components

A Better Life Recovery offers a comprehensive approach to drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation and recovery. Our program includes the following four fundamental components all of which are maintained throughout each client’s individualized program of treatment.

1. Traditional Addiction Treatment

First and foremost our clients must fully confront their drug and alcohol addiction openly and honestly. We believe the best way to do that is through the tried and true principles practiced in Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs, including a commitment to total abstinence from all mind-altering substances. Our clients all speak of the magic of “Group Process” in which they are both supported and encouraged by their peers and and our expert counsellors, a dynamic that often leads to the fundamental break throughs that change and save lives.

Our certified drug and alcohol addiction counselors possess extensive experience in working with recovering drug and alcohol addicts and are among the best in the industry. Our program offers our clients the opportunity to take all 12 of the 12 steps of recovery under the guidance of our dedicated clinical staff.

1 traditional addiction treatment

Our program includes a diverse mix of groups led by expert visiting clinicians, and a robust menu of experiential activities. Art therapy, music therapy, yoga, and surfing therapy are regular components of our program. Exercise and physical health are also prominently featured – all of our clients are given free memberships to “24 Hour Fitness” – a first rate gym facility that is walking distance from our treatment center. We play various sports such as basketball, softball, bowling, go-kart racing, etc. We have outings to theme parks such as Disneyland, and visit points of interest in Southern California including zoos, museums, the aquarium and beaches.

2 intensive program of individualized therapy

2. Instensive Program of Individualized Therapy

We believe our clients also stand to benefit substantially from a rehabilitation program that provides an individualized course of therapy to help address underlying psychosocial issues that may lie at the root of drug and alcohol addiction. Our program is one of the few in the country that includes a minimum twice per week one-on-one therapy sessions with licensed therapists as a standard part of our drug and alcohol addiction treatment protocol. A Better Life Recovery is a recognized leader in deploying therapeutic treatment of the various forms of trauma and other deep psychological wounds that go hand-in-hand with addiction in nearly every case.

3. Medically Assisted Treatment (“MAT”)

A Better Life Recovery constantly evaluates new medical and pharmaceutical protocols to ensure we are able to utilize all the available tools of modern science in the fight against addiction.  Our staff members include Physician Assistants who specialize in addiction treatment, and a Boar- Certified Psychiatrist who is also one of the owners of our Program.  Each new client sees the Psyciatrist upon admission and for follow up visits as needed with the Doctor and/or our Physician Assistants.  These seasoned medical professionals diagnose and prescribe one or more of several treatment and medicines that have proven highly successful especially in the early stages of recovery.

These treatments include Vivitrol injections which substantial reduce cravings and blocks the euphoric effects of opiates and alcohol.  One Vivitrol injection helps protect our clients from relapse for up to 30 days at a time.

Other useful tools include slow release mood stabilizers, anti-depressants and non-addictive sleep assistance medications which are deployed when and as prescribed by our licensed medical team.

A Better Life Recovery does not however prescribe or condone the use of synthetic opiates such as Suboxone or Methadone.  We do not believe that such “Harm Reduction” programs that do little more than substitute one addictive substance for another represent a valid long-term solution to the disease of addiction.

4 reintegration

4. Reintegration Assistance

( Educational, Career, Family, Life Skills, and Community Involvement Counseling/Assistance)

Any reputable traditional addiction treatment program correctly focuses on healing the pervasive effects of chemical dependency – what it has done to our clients physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.  However, few programs go further and attempt to also address that which often hasn’t happened as a result of addiction – namely the “normal” progression of life accomplishments and experiences that are needed to fully function as a healthy member of society.

Our clients are typically confronted with a myriad of practical as well as psychological deficits in their overall development.  They have dropped out of high school or college.  They have on-going legal problems and/or documentation problems such as having no form of ID or driver’s license.

They have little employment or vocational training or experience.  They are encumbered with broken and dysfunctional family relationships and are often clueless in terms of involving themselves in positive social and community endeavors, In most cases they have been deprived of basic skills and knowledge required for modern living that most people take for granted.

Unlike any other program, A Better Life Recovery is geared towards assisting our clients reclaim these external components of healthy living, not just the internal changes that make external accomplishments possible.  Our clients “graduate” from our program not just with a healthy smile, a positive outlook, and a renewed sense of confidence, but also with a good job, a bank account, a career plan, high school diplomas, college enrollment, healed family relationships, healthy friendships, and membership in community/volunteer activities. What we do for our clients during this later stage is nothing less than a revolutionary approach to addiction treatment – an approach that truly sets us apart.

Phase I – Early Recovery: 15 to 30 Days.

In this phase clients typically have just left a detox setting and are still physically stressed and mentally confused.  The paramount goal is to provide them with a comfortable, safe setting and to encourage them to begin the journey of sobriety and recovery.  During this phase they are under the 24/7 care of our trained staff in our Joint Commission certified facilities.  At the start of Phase I clients see our board-certified psychiatrist and may start a new course of medication as recommended by the doctor.  They will meet their assigned therapist, begin the individual therapeutic process and start developing an overall treatment plan.  They will begin the process of getting to know and bonding with house mates and other clients that meet in Group sessions.  During Phase I clients will begin the process of journaling and other work as they start the 12-step process, typically completing steps 1 thru 3 before entering Phase IIWhen ready they might begin to engage in healthy physical activities such as yoga and visits to the nearby 24-Hour Fitness center.

Phase II – Partial Hospitalization/Intensive Outpatient: 45 to 60 Days.

Clients transition to Phase II once the ABLR clinical team feels they have stabilized and have a positive outlook about continuing their journey of recovery. Phase II is the pivotal transitional Phase from the more fragile days of early recovery in Phase I to full reintegration into the “real world’ that occurs in Phase III. Clients continue at first with daily group sessions and twice weekly therapy sessions but may “step down” to 3-4 group sessions per week towards the end of this phase. During this phase clients acquire increasing amounts of personal freedom and interaction with the outside world, including important initiatves such as finding an AA sponsor, starting to interview for jobs, and focusing more on various “life skills” such as resume writing, interview skills, and building an appropriate working wardrobe. ABLR assists with all of these activities.

Phase III – Continuing Outpatient and Reintegration: Up to 1 Year.

The purpose of Phase III is to provide a safety net and on-going treatment while clients build an active healthy life of sustained recovery. Group session attendance typically tapers down from 5 weekly 1-hour sessions at the start of Phase III to one per week towards the end. Therapy sessions may drop from 2 per week to 1 per week. During this phase clients are working full time, typically at first in a “get well” job obtained with the help of ABLR. The goal is to then transition to a long term educational/career plan that may include completing high school, entering community college, completing an arrested college degree track, or entering an apprenticeship, vocational or trade school training program. During Phase III clients will continue to build on the healing of family relationships, establish new healthy friendships, find an AA home group, complete their 12-steps with a sponsor, and find ways to volunteer/get involved in the community.
